A bit of history
W.L. Settlemeyer started his surveying career with the U.S. Geological Survey shortly after World War II. Sut, as he came to be known, led survey expeditions all across the western United States. Some of the notable projects were the accurate measurements of Mounts Hood, Ranier and Shasta (the only reason Google knows their height is because of his work) and the topographic study of what was to become Lake Powell. In 1970, Sut transferred to Tucson, Arizona and operated a branch of the engineering firm Wilsey and Ham, based in Foster City, California. Preparing for the move, Sut (already a licensed California surveyor) acquired his license in not only Arizona, but New Mexico as well. The office was established and the Settlemeyer family made Tucson their home. When the Empire Ranch project was completed, the family remained. Dedicated to his new home, Sut pursued his land surveying practice in Arizona as an independent in collaboration with local engineering companies and as a principal at Urban Engineering. Settlemeyer Surveys, Inc. was started in the 1980’s as a family run business. Mom (Dolores) ran the office, son Rob ran the field crew and Sut researched and mapped the surveys while maintaining client relations. Land surveying evolved quickly with the new technologies developing at the time; laser and infra-red distance metering to GPS satellite measurement, programmable calculators to computers, Pen and Ink to CAD based mapping software. Settlemeyer Surveys stayed on the leading edge. Sut retired in 1997, turning in the sledge hammer that set so many boundary corners bearing his license number, RLS 7599. The business was retained by his sons, Rob and Jon. Settlemeyer, LLC is the new name, but the tradition started by Sut continues today.
Introducing
Rob Settlemeyer joined the family business after serving in the Navy as a Gunner’s Mate. Growing up around the family business, Rob had already been immersed in the survey world. When a Company Commander was curious about his resiliency to basic training, Rob told him that after summer surveys in the Arizona desert, San Diego boot camp was a refreshing break. Acquiring his license as an Arizona land surveyor, Rob has spent years adding his registration number, RLS 26932, to property corners all over southern Arizona. Rob is married with two grown children. Proud? Just ask when you have time.
Jon Settlemeyer came from California in 1987 to join the family enterprise. Old enough to recall the days when the USGS directed the itinerary of his Mom and Dad, surveying seemed the next logical step in his career. Jon brought the company a background from the graphic arts and advertising community; skills that quickly morphed into drafting survey plats and writing parcel descriptions. When you call to order or discuss a survey, he will be the one to greet and guide you through the process, welcoming you to the family of Settlemeyer, LLC.
